                                                                         Content and Assessment for Grade Levels

                        In Grades K through 6 we use the textbook The Music Connection, published by Silver Burdett Ginn Company, which provides a comprehensive music course for the various age groups that corresponds with the curriculum recommendations of the state of Pennsylvania and the Harrisburg Diocese for music. The Music Connection course has Teacher and Student textbooks, resource books, music accompaniment books and a series of audio CDs that accompany the various grade levels. This course makes use of our classroom percussion instruments, keyboards, recorders and guitars along with using the student’s own singing voice. The choice of music examples in the course makes use of all types of music from classical, world music and folk to blues, jazz, country and rock. It integrates musical style, history and vocabulary with music theory and connects with various other areas of social studies, history, math and religion. I also use other resource books, CD’s, videos and DVDs, a digital recorder and music websites, where appropriate, to supplement the lesson books. The lessons usually have an assessment and skills portion for each lesson plan. The skills sections integrate creativity, listening and performing skills. There are assessment supplements that can be printed out and given to the students. The students also get the opportunity for self assessment and peer assessment.

            In grades 7 & 8 we use a textbook and course called the World of Music which is a similar course to the Music Connection. We tend to use a lot more supplemental materials in 7^th and 8^th grade to give the students even more chance for “ hands on” musicianship and creativity.

            We will share a folder with the computer class to hold notes, hand outs and material to take home. This year we have been blessed with the added tool of a SMART Board in the music room to enhance things we have been doing with a more "hands on" approach for the students and make use of many more available music websites.
