One of the most important things you can do this year to help your child is read, read, read! Read to them, read with them and listen to them read.

Here's what we are learning about:

Language Arts

We work hard everyday to become better readers and writers through the Daily 5. We have been learning about different writings. We have been writing friendly letters. We wrote a friendly letter to Miss McNeill and she even responded back! We are starting to write our own personal narratives. We are busy readers and writers!

Math

We have been working hard on our facts. We are learning new facts every week! We practice them everyday. We like to play Around the World and our Making 10,11 and 12 card game. We just began our 100 addition fact timed tests. We also started learning our subtraction facts.

Religion

We are beginning to learn about and practice for Reconciliation. We are talking about the different kinds of sins, different terms dealing with Reconciliation and the form of Penance. We are learning about the 10 Commandments and we even created our own Second Grade Commandments.

 Science/Social Studies

We are beginning to talk about different habitats. We will explore the different habitats and animals. We will be writing our own animal research project!

We are beginning our unit on habitats in Science/Social Studies. There are many fun things planned for this unit. We started by brainstorming different habitats we already knew about. We discussed what four important things a habitat needs (water, food, shelter, space). We drew and labeled our own habitat. We will be researching and learning about different habitats and animals. We will also be writing our own animal research reports! I will be posting different pictures of projects as we complete them.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, you put my drawing on the bulletin board. And I was inspired to draw another and another.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, you were nice to the class misfit. And I felt bad that we had hurt his feelings.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw how you used the Bible. And I began to respect the word of God.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, you stood up to greet a visitor. And I learned what it means to be welcoming.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, you stopped the class and we prayed a Hail Mary as an ambulance went by. Now I always pray when I hear ambulances and fire engines.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, you said please and thank you. And I saw the importance of courtesy.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, you kept a bully from picking on a smaller boy. And I saw what justice can do.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I heard the way you prayed. And I knew there was a God I could always talk to.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw you go out of your way to recycle an aluminum can. And I understood how important the environment is.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I watched you receive Communion. And I learned to show reverence for the Body and Blood of Christ.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I noticed your affection for the Mother of Jesus. And now I call her my Mother too.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I was indeed looking. And I want to say thank you for all the things I saw when you thought I wasn’t looking.
